The planned three-day strike by 400 Shelter workers was called off at the last minute after tense negotiations at ACAS.
The strike was due to have begun yesterday, but the union Unite said it had received “a significant improvement” in offers from the charity.
These included better pay for new starters and a pledge not to cut the pay of existing staff.
The new deals will now be put to a ballot.
Campbell Robb, chief executive of Shelter, said: “Decisions on these issues are tough and not ones any of us want to make.
“Along with the package of measures we were able to agree with the union, we were also pleased to reaffirm that we have no plans to review the pay rates of existing staff.”

It used to be up to 80% of charity donation can be grabbed! More in keeping with running a business than a charity. Maybe one day shelter will produce their fees before they ask for money from the public, as they are so keen on us doing with tenants.
How much was Campbell Robb's pay being cut by?
Just maybe the chief executive and his top managers should take a long hard look at their own remuneration packages before clobbering the staff ? And they should keep Shelter out of politics – or risk losing their charitable status.
