In view of his spate of ‘calls for evidence’ hurled at the industry, Communities Secretary Sajid Javid has expressed a surprising ambition – to become an estate agent.

We hasten to say that this was said in the spirit of irony (although in these uncertain times, who can be sure?) rather than that of someone making a job application.

Speaking at the annual Black British Awards last week, Javid – who has overall control of the housing brief – said: “Good afternoon everyone, and thank you to the Black British Business Awards team for inviting me to join you all here today.

“It’s a real honour to be here.

“And it’s a pleasure to be back in the City. I spent many happy years working in finance, including just up the road at Deutsche Bank.

“It’s fair to say that bankers aren’t the most-loved people in Britain.

“When I left banking to become a politician I got the feeling I was the only new MP who was moving into a more popular profession.

“I might go for the hat-trick next, and become an estate agent!”
