The end of tenancy cleanup can often make or break the decision to hand back a deposit so spare a thought for this student whose video of the mess he was left to clean after his housemates left has gone viral.

22-year-old University of the West of England journalism student Matt Sterling returned to his student digs after six weeks home to pick up his belongings and return his keys, only to find his housemates had left sewage in the sink, a broken toilet and a flooded washing machine.

As is required in these modern times, Sterling quickly filmed the mess with his own witty commentary and posted it to social media such as Snapchat, Facebook and Twitter, attracting millions of views.

Even the lettings agents were talking about the video when he went to return the keys, with Matt overhearing them saying it would be fine as long as the mess was cleared.

Luckily, he thinks they didn’t know it was him when he returned the keys.

He told EYE he had spent three days cleaning the property and making it spotless with his mum and another housemate. His poor mum had sink duty though!

Deposits are usually returned in August so he hopes his efforts will be enough to get a good chunk back.
