A new property search app has just launched – especially for Jersey which measures just nine miles long and has a population of 100,800.
Founder Neil Harvey described it as a kind of Rightmove for the island.
He said: “Unlike mainland UK, where we have more apps than you can shake your stick at for searching property, there was nothing similar for searching property in Jersey, which is amazing considering the quality and professional nature of most estate agents on the island.”
The Jersey app has the latest properties for sale and rent on the home screen on the island and a news feature where agents and other industry professionals can upload property content.
The app allows searchers to write messages on each property, share via social media and make an offer.
There are thought to be some 30 estate agents on Jersey – and around 24 on its neighbour Guernsey (12 miles long), where Harvey plans to launch his next app.
So far, the Jersey app has attracted over 1,000 users, and 7,000 sessions have been recorded.
The seven agents so far signed up are: Broadlands, Troys, Wilsons, Keys Properties, Indigo, Le Gallais and Best Estates.
Zinzi Coetzee, marketing manager of Broadlands, said the new app is proving a “very easy and user-friendly one-stop shop”.
And before readers comment, we are not sure how many Channel Island agents read EYE.
However, we have in mind an all-expenses paid, winter sunshine holiday (sorry, we mean two-week fact-finding tour) by the editor, and we should be able to report back.

No. It is not part of Great Britain. Great Britain is not a constitutional entity and its relationship is with the Crown rather than England or the UK as nations. There aren’t any other similar set-ups. British Dependent Terrirories (such as Gibraltar, the Falklands and a handful of countries in the Caribbean and Pacific) are directly tied to the British Government in one form or other. The only close similarity is the Isle of Man.

Not part of the UK Wilko! And only an “associate” member of the EU, hence no VAT etc. Legally a Crown Dependency, not a British Dependent Territory, William the Conq owned it already as Duke of Normandy when he invaded England in 1066. An agreement was made with King John that the Bailiwick of Jersey and Bailiwick of Guernsey (two separates states) that they could keep their independence as long as they provided arms for the king when requested. Hence the close ties with us. Most of the islanders did not speak English as their main language until a hundred years or so ago and their legal system, including a unique land law are Norman French based. But they’re as proudly British as we are!
I was aware that it was a crown dependency but individuals represent Great Britain in sports. There is a gold postbox outside Sark post office as a resident won Gold at London 2012.

Would it be right to say it is part of Great Britain rather than the United Kingdom?
All very well having an app. to show the properties on the island, and there are some beautiful properties there, but bearing in mind non islanders aren’t allowed to move there (unless you fulfil criteria that most of us couldn’t) then I can’t see the app having much movement for expansion. If there wasn’ t any criteria, I’d move to Jersey tomorrow, in the meantime I’ll carry on saving.
Out of interest what is the criteria?

Force 10, standing off St Peter Port for over 12 hours with enough water coming over the decks to activate the EPIRB! You left out the bit about it being at the top end of the Bay of Biscay!
Weather aside I think this is brilliant innovation; the future of the digital world is ‘local’ and this is an early indication of the shift in power as the digital revolution matures.
