The new President of the NAEA has described the housing minister’s refusal to regulate the sector as “disappointing”.
However, Martyn Baum said it was important that the industry does not “wallow” in that disappointment, but instead take the initiative to drive forward standards.
At 34 Baum – whose wife Natasha is also an estate agent – is the youngest NAEA President since Melfyn Williams. However, having been in the industry since the age of 18, he already has 16 years of experience under his belt.
He said he hopes to reach out to the next generation of property professionals – today’s negotiators and trainee valuers who will become tomorrow’s business leaders.
He also said that many “traditional” estate agents have a better online offering than “online agents”.

The industry has a fair chunk of legislation in place. It’s for bodies to support what’s already there.
Compulsary Licencing is a grail for any ‘body’ as it means agents would HAVE to join. But is NAEA best suited to enforce its thoughts on the way agents trade.
Pre 16 years ago there were some excellent agency practices that supported and encouraged better agency and better consumer service.
Ways that NAEA are not seen heavily pushing. Thus would agents having to join really be in agent and consumer best interest?
Martyn instead of moaning why regulation is not coming in, what don’t you come out and tell us what you think / will do to the agents involved in the money laundering expo featured on TV 2 days ago?
You actually have a chance to promote the industry here as your members broke the law. Why not reassure the public that this practise in not allowed and will not be tolerated as professional individuals.
I see the only reason you want regulation is because you feel it will grow your numbers and income. Why not actually do something for our industry and promote it.
