When an estate agent posted what it innocently thought was a helpful tip, it sparked off a conflagration on Twitter.

Jackson Stops London suggested to its 700 followers that a good way of cooking cheese on toast was to turn the toaster on its side.

The London Fire Brigade was appalled and posted: “Worst idea ever! This has caused a fire before, so we wouldn’t say it was helpful.”

Jacksons Stops immediately posted back: “Oh wow! Thank you for letting us know! We will remove this post immediately. Appreciate your advice and hard work!”

After the tweet became toast, a spokesperson for Jackson-Stops & Staff said: “We completely accept the advice of the London Fire Brigade and encourage everyone to do so.

“We apologise for what was intended to be a light-hearted tweet on a Friday.”

She added that the agent would be making a donation to the Fire Fighters Charity by way of apology.

Eye sees that the firm has since stuck to much safer tips, including the somewhat unseasonal use of egg boxes to store delicate Christmas tree decorations.

Still, we suppose it makes a change from all those agents who use Twitter to talk about properties, as in “We’ve sold one”, “We’ve been instructed on one” and “We’d like some more”.
